Poriferans, or sponges, are aquatic animals with variable shapes. Their body is formed by different cell types that have
a considerable degree of independence and are not organized into tissues or organs. Nerve and muscle cells are lacking. The
body walls show numerous pores on their surface, which are connected by a system of canals. Specialized cells, the flagellated
choanocytes, allow water into the pores and canals, and filter it by means of a netlike collar, so as to capture food.
